Pregnancy Acne Skincare Routine With Dr. Jennifer Ng

Pregnancy is a beautiful journey filled with changes and transformations, both physical and emotional. While many expecting mothers radiate a healthy glow, some might experience an unexpected side effect: acne.

Dr. Jennifer Ng is a Doctor of Chinese Medicine and licensed acupuncturist specializing in cosmetic acupuncture. She's 8-month pregnant and a soon-to-be mom. While her pregnancy is all smooth sailing, her hormonal acne had a different agenda. Hormonal fluctuations during pregnancy is normal, but can lead to an increase in sebum production, potentially causing breakouts.

Jen uses YINA's medicinal plant-based skincare products to help balance her sebum production and repair her skin. The results was incredible and inspired this blog post. In this post, we'll guide you through a comprehensive TCM-based pregnancy acne skincare routine, allowing you to nurture your skin while prioritizing the well-being of both you and your baby.

hormonal acne before and after

Jen starts her skincare routine with a gentle cleanser. She's been loving YINA's Bioadaptive Cleanser which has soothing White Tea extract, purifying Poria Mushroom, and brightening Pearl Powder. Apply 3 to 5 pumps onto dry skin, wet your fingers and massage gently. "I usually spend about 1 to 2 minutes massaging my face to help relax my jaw" she says.

After rinsing thoroughly with water, Jen follows up with generous spritz of balancing and hydrating Essential Mist. Jen's pro tip is to "take a cotton ball to remove extra dir and impurities from the pores." She emphasizes that "this is an essential step for acne-prone skin." She finishes with another spritz of the mist to help prep her skin for the next step.

While the skin is still damp from the mist, apply 2-3 drops of Clarify Botanical Serum. This is active serum is the star of the show. It has a complex blend of TCM herbs like ginseng, lotus, and schisandra berries to balance sebum production, promote cellular renewal, and heal the skin barrier. Warm the serum between your palms and press it into the skin for maximum absorption.

Jen notes that this is the "perfect base" to do some very light Gua Sha while your skin has some slip. Start at the neck by using the wavy edge to move from the jaw down to the neck. Remember to hold your tool as flat as possible, about 35 degree perpendicular to the skin. Then move the the jaw and cheek by scraping from the chin towards the ear, from the nose towards the side hairline.

"The combination of the Clarify Botanical Serum and this Gua Sha routine really helped clear up my pregnancy acne."

The last step to Jen's routine is to lock in all the hydration with a nourishing cream. Hydracloud Cream is a lighteweight yet moisturizing cream with Ginseng + Adaptogens Complex and Niacinamide to further heal, brighten, and even out skin complexion. Jen likes to use a small amount for her face, lips, and neck. Remember to follow up with sunscreen in the morning!

And there you have it! As with all skincare routine, consistency and patience is key. Pregnancy can be emotionally taxing, and stress may contribute to skin issues. Consider incorporating stress-relieving practices such as meditation, gentle yoga, or deep breathing exercises into your daily routine. Taking time for self-care not only benefits your mental well-being but also reflects positively on your skin's health.
